SNR P3RS9ECTIVE has recently added a sustainability committee to its many collaborative groups. One of their newest projects is both on theme and utilizes reusable materials. At the Newburgh Armory, the committee will be teaching kids how to make their own DIY kaleidoscope, using leftover toilet paper or paper towel rolls.
Here’s a simple step-by-step guide so you can do it too!
Materials:
- Cardboard tube (from paper towels)
- 3 pieces of reflective paper or foil-covered cardboard
- Clear plastic (from packaging)
- Colorful beads, sequins, or bits of paper
- Wax paper
- Scissors and tape
- Ruler
Steps:
1. Make the Mirrors:
- Cut the reflective paper into three equal rectangles.
- Tape them into a triangle with the shiny sides facing inward.
2. Insert the Prism:
- Slide the triangular mirror shape into the cardboard tube.
3. Viewing Hole:
- Cut a cardboard circle to cover one end of the tube.
- Poke a small hole in the center and tape it on.
4. Colorful End:
- Cut two plastic circles and place beads or sequins between them.
- Tape the plastic circles to the other end of the tube.
5. Finishing Touch:
- Cover the outer plastic layer with wax paper to soften the light.
How to use: Look through the viewing hole, point the other end toward the light, and twist to see shifting patterns.
Bonus Tip: Try experimenting with different materials in the object chamber (like dried flowers or small glass beads) or use colored cellophane for unique effects.
